WPD officer killed in accident identified

35-year-old suspect arrested

Our news partners at KSN-TV report a 35-year-old man was arrested at the scene of a fatal crash involving an off-duty Wichita Police officer.

The accident occurred Friday evening, at 21st Street North and 167th Street West. The off-duty officer, identified as 37-year-old Stacy Woodson, was riding a motorcycle and his ten-year-old son was a passenger. The pair was struck by a truck, killing the officer. The boy was transported to an area hospital and remains in critical condition. 

In a statement, WPD Chief Gordon Ramsay said, “The WPD family is greatly saddened by this tragic news. Our thoughts and prayers remain with Stacy’s family, friends, and others affected by this tragedy.”  

Stacy was a 16-year-veteran of the WPD.  He is remembered for his leadership, professionalism, and selflessness. 

The 35 year-old suspect was booked into jail around 2 a.m. Saturday. He is being held on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter under the influence and aggravated battery DUI causing great bodily harm or disfigurement.

The accident is under investigation by the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.
